Première monographie sur le travail de David Coste, Territoires Intermittents naît de la rencontre entre l’artiste et le graphiste Grégoire Romanet. À deux, ils explorent la frontière de l’édition avec l’art contemporain ainsi que la mise en forme d’un récit visuel à l’image du travail artistique, capable de se déployer dans la page. L’édition propose un parcours dans l’univers de l’artiste, entre cinéma, notions de temporalité et work in progress.

Les dessins et les photographies de David Coste nous transportent dans des paysages désincarnés, remplis d’habitations factices, à l’atmosphère rendue irréelle par leur structure recolorisée. Tant de perspectives inquiétantes où la nature côtoie l’artifice et l’habitat la vacuité ; dans ce monde, l’image devient un document plus certain que la réalité même.

Le projet graphique de l’ouvrage imagine une édition à tiroirs, tel un bureau rangé en trois entrées, visibles dès l’ouverture de l’objet. La cartographie du monde d’images et de textes inédits se matérialise par des formats de page différents, des longueurs de papier variées. À la lecture, des rapports d’échelle entre fiction et réalité se créent, et la narration se nourrit ainsi des superpositions de sens et de formes.

First monograph on the work of David Coste, Intermittent Boundaries sprang from the encounter between the artist and the graphic designer Grégoire Romanet. Together, they explore the line between publishing and contemporary art as well as the composition of a visual narrative which, like artistic work, can unfold along the pages. The book's editing offers a gateway into the artist's world, between cinema, the notion of time and work in progress.

With the drawings and photographies of David Coste we travel amongst disembodied landscapes, filled with fake housing where recolored structures create an unreal atmosphere. So many worrying perspectives where nature mixes with artefact and housing with emptiness; in this world, image becomes a more trustworthy document than reality itself.

The book's graphic projet imagined a format with drawers, like a desk with three levels, which the reader can discover at first sight. The ensemble of images and texts is materialized by different paper formats. Throughout the book, connections between reality and fiction appear, and the narration is enriched by the overlapping of meaning and shape.
