Johannes Strugalla, né en 1943 à Lueben, en Silésie – actuelle Pologne –, vit et travaille entre Mayence et Paris. Régulièrement exposé en Europe et aux États-Unis, on retrouve ses œuvres dans des collections prestigieuses, telles que celles du Victoria and Albert Museum, de l'université de Stanford, ou du Klingspor-Museum d'Offenbach. Son travail est en partie influencé par l'informel allemand et l'expressionisme abstrait américain ce qui lui confère une grande force structurelle. C'est autour du dessin et du bois gravé que s'articule principalement son oeuvre dont le tissu formel abstrait laisse parfois entrevoir la figuration. Cofondateur de Despalles éditions, il est essentiellement connu pour ses livres d’artiste dans lesquels se tisse un lien étroit entre texte et image. Pour Naked, il a imaginé, en monochrome, un nu aussi vigoureux que tourmenté, à la fois graphique et poétique.

Johannes Strugalla, born in 1943 in Lueben, Silesia, – nowaday Poland –, lives and works between Mainz and Paris. His works are regularly displayed through Europe and the United States and can be found within prestigious collections such as those of the V&A Museum, the Stanford University or the Klingspor-Museum Offenbach. His work, partly influenced by German Informel and the American Abstract Expressionism, is of a huge structural strengh. It is mainly structured around drawing and engraved wood, and sometimes appears a kind of figuration through the formal abstraction. Co-founder of the publishing house Despalles editions, he is largely known for his artist's books in which he builts a close link between texts and images. For Naked, he imagines, a monochromic nude, as vigourous as tormented, graphic and lyrical at the same time.
